It is late summer.  The days are starting to get shorter and in the Niagara Region the grapes are ripening beautifully…

We arrive at the first stop on our itinerary to sample their award winning Pinot Noir.  We cozy up to the bar; solid marble, rich with earth tones.  Very comfortable.  We order a flight of three wines to sample – Pinot Noir, Cab Franc and the house choice, a 2014 Cabernet.  Rich, lingering notes of berry and figs; the Pinot was great!  The Cab Franc was by my palate a bit light but had a strong Cab finish.  It was the Cab that our bartender selected that we will both remember with big bold tobacco and earth tanned leather.  Powerful.  A definite return visit is in order.

We hop onto our bicycles and travel merrily along the pathway to our next vineyard a short distance away.  Again, a modern structure awaits.  The development of vineyards in the Niagra Region has been going strong for the past ten years.  Here we find a whole new style of architecture – a reclaimed salvage kind of feeling… high ceiling, steel, glass – interesting but cool.  Again a visit to the bar is in order.  This time we choose a white Chardonnay and an Ice Wine for a possible dessert selection.  Well, the Chardonnay lacked crispness; a touch too tart and a bit acidic… disappointing.  The Ice Wine; however, was sensational!  A unique blend of Riesling grapes with a hint of orange and a velvety feel on the tongue.  We bought 4 bottles for a dinner party planned later in the year.  The baskets on our bicycles sure came in handy!

Our last visit was to Joseph’s Estate Winery, located in the heart of Niagara’s Wine Country.  This 20-acre estate has been in the region a little longer than all the rest and the building reflects the history of the region.  Not only was the building warmer, but the staff set a tone that was different than the others we had visited that weekend.  It reminded me of the rustic chateaus in France where red brick gravel lines the floors and the damp earthy aroma catches your attention.  Back to our sommelier, Kayla paid extra attention to us.  Maybe she saw we were enthralled with the site or maybe she was just extraordinaire.  Much like the grounds, the selection of wines had an old world feeling.  A wonderful Sauvignon Blanc, Cab Merlot blend and a young sparkling wine that will leave you smiling.

Joseph’s Estate Winery is a definite must visit when you explore Niagara’s wine country!

After a fun filled day of wine tasting we were famished for something hearty.  We innocently picked Niagara-on-the-Lakes allegedly haunted restaurant – Corks Winebar.  It is said that a woman was accidently murdered by her mentally ill brother.  Many people claim to have seen her ghost in the basement, where she was buried.  Today, the ghost is said to haunt Corks; but we’ll explore the alleged paranormal of the Niagra region in another blog… stay tuned! Mwahhahahaaa
